CNN's Mohammed Jamjoom looks at the case of an Iranian mother who is to be stoned to death after an adultery conviction.
Inhumanity in Iran. Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, an Iranian mother of two, faces imminent death, according to Mina Ahadi, head of the International Committee Against Stoning and the Death Penalty. Ashtiani is to be stoned to death for adultery, a crime which merits capital punishment in Iran.
Mina Ahadi, human rights defender, claims the mother of two will be stoned to death at any moment under the terms of a death sentence handed down by Iranian authorities. "Legally it's all over," Ahadi said Sunday. "It's a done deal. Sakineh can be stoned at any minute. That is why we have decided to start a very broad, international public movement. Only that can help."
Ashtiani, who is from the northern city of Tabriz, was convicted of adultery in 2006. Ashtiani confessed after being whipped, she then retracted that confession and denied any adultery. Nevertheless, the ruling was upheld in 2007 by Iran's supreme court.
Amnesty International reports:
The Iranian authorities continue to sentence people to death by stoning. Currently there are at least 11 individuals at risk of execution by stoning. According to Iran's Penal Code, execution by stoning is prescribed for "adultery while being married".
The Penal Code specifies the manner of execution and types of stones that should be used. Article 102 states that men will be buried up to their waists and women up to their breasts for the purpose of execution by stoning.
Article 104 states, with reference to the penalty for adultery, that the stones used should "not
be large enough to kill the person by one or two strikes; nor should they be so small that they could not be defined as stones". This makes it clear that the purpose of stoning is to inflict pain in a process leading to slow death.
Help save ave Sakineh Mohammadi from being Stoned to Death in Iran.

Caros amigos,
